Reporter Sharyl Attkisson resigns from CBS, citing liberal bias

Sharyl Attkisson, the reporter who broke the “Fast and Furious” scandal and investigated the Benghazi attacks, resigned from CBS News on Monday, blaming the network’s left-wing bias and an unwillingness to dig deeply.

The Washington Post reports that despite months of negotiations between Attkisson and CBS, the investigative reporter chose to sever her contract with the company ahead of schedule.

“I have resigned from CBS,” she declared on Twitter Monday, adding later in a statement that her two-decade career at the network was “one of life’s great privileges” and that she was “extremely grateful” for the opportunity.

“CBS News veteran Sharyl Attkisson is leaving the news division to pursue other endeavors,” the network said in a statement. “We appreciate her many contributions and we wish her well.”

Sources close to Attkisson told Politico she felt stymied by CBS’ liberal leanings and hesitance to give her investigative work the proper air-time. “It’s no secret that Sharyl has been unhappy about CBS’s lack of interest in investigative reporting, especially when it comes to stories about the Obama administration,” one claimed.

Media analyst Andrew Tyndall noted that since 2007, Attkisson’s work has been used less and less on CBS, dropping off precipitously after 2009 — President Obama’s first year in office. “She was obviously being sidelined,” Tyndall told the Washington Post.

Attkisson’s reporting on the Department of Justice’s “Fast and Furious” gun-walking operation in 2012 revealed the botched operation to the public, prompting Congress to conduct a slew of investigations and hold US Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt.

Last May, the investigative reporter alleged her computers had been hacked by unknown persons — an account later confirmed by CBS. Attkisson speculated the hack was related to her reporting on the 2012 Benghazi attacks, telling Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly last June she thought she knew who was responsible. But neither she nor CBS have provided further information on the breach since last summer.

It’s unclear whether Attkisson will be moving to another network, though she is working on a book — tentatively titled “Stonewalled: One Reporter’s Fight for Truth in Obama’s Washington” — due out this November.
